How PoE actually works

Power over Ethernet means one Cat6 cable does both jobs — no outlets needed at the camera. Here's the full chain.

1. Cat6 cable to every camera
We run a single Cat6/Cat6a from each camera location back to the network rack. Carries data + 48V PoE power.
2. UniFi PoE switch
Mounts in your network rack or media closet. Powers every camera over the same cable that carries video back.
3. UNVR or Cloud Key
Local recording appliance. Footage lives on drives you own — no cloud, no subscription, no monthly fee.
4. UniFi Protect app
Free app for iOS / Android / desktop. Live view, recorded playback, smart-detection alerts, and remote access (if you want it).

UniFi vs. Ring / Nest / Arlo

Why our customers pick hardwired UniFi over consumer cloud cameras.

UniFi Protect

Local + owned
  • No subscription, ever. Buy once, own forever.
  • Footage on drives you own — not on someone's cloud
  • Works without internet (local recording continues during outages)
  • True 4MP–8MP resolution; cloud cams compress aggressively
  • One app, unlimited cameras, no per-camera fees
  • Hardwired = no WiFi dropouts, no batteries to swap

Ring / Nest / Arlo

Cloud + rented
  • $3–$20/month per camera for cloud recording
  • Footage on their servers; lose access if subscription lapses
  • Internet outage = no recording at all
  • Compressed video; license-plate reads often unreadable
  • WiFi cameras drop signal, batteries die mid-event
  • ~Lower install cost up front; cost climbs over time

Every install includes

On-site walk-through
We walk the property, mark every camera position, and confirm Cat6 routing before any cable moves.
Cat6/Cat6a runs
Cleanly routed through attic/basement back to your network rack. Tested with a cable certifier.
UniFi Protect setup
We bind the NVR to your network, adopt every camera, configure smart-detection zones.
App walk-through
We pair the UniFi Protect app on your phone and show you live + recorded views before leaving.

What we provide vs. what you bring: Customer buys the UniFi gear (cameras, NVR, switch, drives). UHE provides labor, Cat6 cable + termination, conduit runs as needed, and full UniFi Protect configuration.
