What needs an electrician — and what doesn't

Some smart-home pieces are plug-and-play; others have to be wired into your existing electrical. Here's the honest split.

UHE installs

  • Smart switches & dimmers (replaces existing switches — wired)
  • Smart doorbell transformer upgrade (16–24V AC)
  • New circuits or outlets (garage opener, audio amp rack)
  • In-ceiling speaker pre-wire (Cat6 / speaker cable runs)
  • Hub mounting + first-time programming

You can DIY

  • Smart thermostat (if existing wiring has a C-wire)
  • Smart locks (battery-powered, replaces existing lockset)
  • Plug-in cameras (Ring / Nest standard models)
  • Smart speakers (Sonos, HomePod, plug-and-play)
  • Smart plugs and outlet adapters (no wiring)

Happy to install the DIY items too if you'd rather not — but a lot of customers save the labor and do those themselves.

Lutron Caséta vs. RA — which one?

Both are Lutron. Both work great. They're aimed at different homes.

RA2 / RA3

Smart Whole Home
  • Pro-grade; professionally programmed by UHE
  • Wireless Main Repeater handles 100+ devices
  • Multi-zone scenes, schedules, occupancy/vacancy sensors, time-of-day rules
